Topeka is the capital of the State of Kansas and has a population of about 120,000. It is also the location of Washburn University of Topeka, a municipally owned university with about 5,000 students, granting under graduate degrees and Juris Doctorate degrees from a fine law school. Topeka is also the county seat of Shawnee County, which has a population of about 170,000. Our largest employer is the State of Kansas, with most of the state employees in the downtown area near the state capital. Two new state office buildings are located near the State Capitol Building, which will opened in 2001. Topeka is well served by the public schools, Unified School District #501, and several Catholic, Lutheran and private schools. Other large employers in Topeka are Western Resources, Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., Payless Shoe Source, which has their headquarters here, Hill Pet Products, Stormont Vail Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Medical Center, and Security Benefit Group of Companies.
